About This Project

In 2023, the IIAR International Committee conducted a global survey to identify and map the standards and codes of practice that govern industrial ammonia refrigeration systems in key countries and regions. This work supports IIAR’s mission to promote the safe and sustainable use of natural refrigerants and to keep industry stakeholders informed about relevant codes.

The initial 2023 survey focused on existing codes for ammonia (NH₃) systems and gathered responses from 14 countries across Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The United States was not included in that first effort.

In the U.S., however, IIAR Standards remain the regulatory foundation for the natural refrigeration industry. In 2025, IIAR’s Marketing and Compliance Committees collected comparable information for the U.S., with an emphasis on regulatory and local requirements instead. That information is presented here under the U.S. map.

If you identify any errors or concerns with the information on this website, we encourage you to notify us by completing this survey. IIAR has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information as of October 2025. While IIAR does not undertake to monitor all future changes, it may update these lists as new information becomes available.
